Japan won the Women's Hockey Asia Cup in Oman by defeating three-time champions South Korea 4-2 in he final at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.

India prevailed in the bronze-medal match versus China.

The victory gives Japan their third title, after 2007 and 2013 triumphs, to equal South Korea's record total.

Lee Seung-ju opened the scoring for South Korea after 12 minutes, before they were pegged back by Kaho Tanaka.

Captain Cheon Eun-bi then put South Korea in the lead again but a flurry of goals from Kanon Mori, Tanaka and Yuri Nagai in the 37th, 45th and 46th minutes pushed Japan to victory.

The runners-up in Muscat have not won the trophy in more than 20 years, with their victories coming in 1985, 1994 and 1999.

All three of South Korea's losses in the final have come at the hands of Japan.

India secured bronze after defeating China 2-0 courtesy of two goals from penalty corners.

In a rematch of the 2017 final that India won via a shootout, 20-year-old forward Sharmila Devi took advantage of a rebound to draw first blood after 13 minutes.

Just six minutes later, defender Gurjit Kaur doubled the lead with a powerful strike which came from another set piece.

China upped the ante and launched countless attacks but the Indian defence, especially goalkeeper Navjot Kaur held firm to keep the clean sheet.

The Chinese enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the fourth quarter and had three consecutive penalty corners in the final few minutes but failed to convert.

All four teams in action today directly qualified to the Women's Hockey World Cup, due to be co-hosted by Spain and The Netherlands from July 1 to 17.
