Spain's captain Ortiz, who has lifted the trophy five times in his career, added two further goals in the second half for a 5-1 full-time scoreline.

With Euro 2022 set to be his last major tournament, Ortiz is hoping to go all the way once again.

"I've always been proud to wear this shirt," he said.

"I'm going to make the most of every moment of this tournament, because I'm sure it's my last.

"We're not hiding.

"We've come here to win the title and to fight in every game."

In the day's earlier game, European Championship debutants Georgia staged a stirring comeback to beat Azerbaijan 3-2.

Azerbaijan had been the last team to win their first match at the finals when they defeated Hungary in 2010, and quick-fire goals from Rafael Vilela had Azerbaijan in control early on.

However, Elisandro and Arhil Sebiskveradze levelled the scores by the 27^th minute, before the winner came from Thales from the penalty spot.

The second round of fixtures is scheduled to begin with Group A tomorrow.

Serbia play Ukraine with both seeking to bounce back from defeats in their first matches, followed by defending champions Portugal against hosts The Netherlands.
