Both Germany and Russia had collected two gold medals apiece in the skeleton competitions on the first day of the Championships at the Olympic Sliding Centre.

Maximilian Illmann and Lukas Koller were the best performers on both runs in the two-man bobsleigh competition, clocking 51.95sec and 52.21 for a winning total of 1min 44.16 sec, and the first German gold of the day.

Switzerland's Timo Rohner and Luca Rolli were 0.22 seconds slower in second place, with another German pair in Jonas Jannusch and Benedikt Hertel completing the podium in 1:44.44.

Laurin Zern and Rupert Schenk were sixth overall and the top under-23 performers with their 1:44.81 effort, clinching another title for Germany.

Russia's Stepan Dubinko and Aleksei Kislitsa were second in the lower age bracket with their time of 1:44.93, with Austria's Jakob Mandlbauer and Daiyehan Nichols-Bardi third in 1:45.66.

The third German gold of the day went to Maureen Zimmer, who triumphed in the women's monobob.

Zimmer was quickest on both runs with her times of 55.96 and 56.21, and finished with 1:52.17.

Lubov Chernykh of Russia was second in 1:52.60, with Viktória Čerňanská of Slovakia clocking 1:52.87 for third place.

Čerňanská's performance earned her the under-23 title, beating Romania's Georgeta Popescu by 0.20 seconds.

Poland's Julia Slupecka collected under-23 bronze in 1:54.11.

The Championships are set to conclude tomorrow with competition in the four-man and two-woman bobsleigh.
