Peter_KirkbrideNovember 27 - Three British weightlifters have had to pull out of this weekend's European Junior and Under-23 Championships in Cyprus because of injury.

Delhi bronze medallist Zoe Smith, Jack Oliver and Ben Watson will be disappointed about not competing in Limassol as the team had hoped to build on its successful performance at the Commonwealth Games.

British Weight Lifting's (BWL) performance manager Fiona Lothian said: "Although it is disappointing that three of the team have not travelled with selection for London 2012 only 18 months away, it is crucial that they take this time to get fully fit leading into next year.

"Helen Jewell, Chris Freebury and Peter Kirkbride (pictured) have trained well since the Commonwealth Games and both will be looking to improve on their current bests."

Shaun Clegg, Peter Barnett, Jewell, Freebury and Kirkbride were all involved in a BWL squad camp at the High Performance Centre in Leeds last weekend where they put the finishing touches to their preparation.

"This is the first year that there has been an Under-23 Championships," added Lothian.

"It's a great addition to the international calendar and gives those athletes coming out of the junior ranks another opportunity to gain experience at a major championships."
