The International Ski Federation's Cross-Country World Cup circuit continues on Saturday in the Swiss resort of Davos, with the early stages of the men's and women's events having proved closely fought.

Norway's Johannes Høsflot Klæbo won last week's men's sprint freestyle World Cup on home ice in Lillehammer, while the distance event - the 15 kilometres freestyle - was won by his compatriot Simen Hegstad Krüger.

Russian duo Alexander Terentyev and Alexander Bolshunov and Finland's Iivo Niskanen had each won a World Cup in Ruka last month.

Klæbo leads the overall standings with 281 points, followed by Bolshunov on 245 and Norway's Erik Valnes on 185.

In the women's competition, Sweden's Maja Dahlqvist has won both sprint World Cups held in Ruka and Lillehammer, while her compatriot Frida Karlsson has triumphed in two of the distance events.

Karlsson occupies the yellow bib with 340 points, while Dahlqvist is classed as the best sprinter so far.

She has 227 points - all from the sprints - placing her third overall.

Norway's Therese Johaug separates them on the leaderboard, collecting 275 points from the distance events, including a victory in the 10km freestyle pursuit in Ruka.

Men's and women's sprint freestyle qualification is set to be staged tomorrow, followed by the World Cup.

Distance World Cups will be held in the men's 15km freestyle and women's 10km freestyle on Sunday (December 12).

These will be the sixth and seventh World Cups on this season's circuit.
