Katharina Althaus earned her first Ski Jumping World Cup win since 2018 after an impressive performance in Lillehammer.

The German ski jumper had secured a podium finish last weekend in Nizhny Tagil and produced a top-five performance in qualification yesterday, outlining her status as a contender for victory.

Althaus topped the standings after the first round of competition by achieving a distance of 96 metres at the Lysgårdsbakkene Ski Jumping Arena.

The effort received a score of 145.3 points.

Austria’s Marita Kramer, who topped qualification yesterday, placed second at the halfway mark on 143.4.

Slovenia’s Ursa Bogataj and Norway’s Silje Opseth remained in contention with efforts of 141.4 and 135.6.

Althaus sealed victory by recording a distance of 95.5m in the second round, adding a further 132.8 points to her tally.

Her overall score of 278.1 points put her clear at the top of the standings.

Kramer was forced to settle for second place on 273.2, with Bogataj 0.9 further back to round off the podium places.

Opseth had produced the highest-scoring second-round jump of 133.1 but missed the medals by ending on 268.7.

The victory saw Althaus win her first World Cup event since she claimed back-to-back wins at Premanon in France in December 2018.

The 25-year-old has now won eight World Cup competitions in her career.

Half of her triumphs have come in Lillehammer, with two triumphs in December 2017 and a further victory at the same venue in 2018.

Althaus, the Pyeongchang 2018 silver medallist, will seek further success at the venue tomorrow with a large hill event scheduled to take place.
