Norway’s Gyda Westvold Hansen earned victory at the opening women's International Ski Federation (FIS) Nordic Combined World Cup of the season in Lillehammer.

The ski jumping section of the event saw Mari Leinan Lund top the standings after an effort of 98 metres at the Lysgårdsbakken venue.

Her effort was rewarded with a score of 138.5.

Lund would begin the five kilometres cross-country event with a cushion of 20 seconds over Italy’s Annika Sieff, who was second in the ski jumping on 133.4 points.

Westvold Hansen was third in the opening discipline on 128.8 points, giving her a 39-second time gap to close on the leader.

The 19-year-old, who claimed the world title in Oberstdorf earlier this year, proved up to the challenge.

Westvold Hansen recorded the fastest time in the 5km cross-country event, completing the distance in 15min 13.4sec.

Her overall finishing time was 15:52.4.

Lund had been unable to hold off her compatriot in the cross-country event, but held on to finish as the runner-up at 8.4sec down.

Sieff completed the podium places after crossing the line 56.1 behind the winner.

The result saw Westvold Hansen assume the first leader’s yellow bib of the season, with nine World Cup competitions planned.

This season is only the second to feature an FIS Nordic Combined World Cup circuit for women.

The women's World Cup series is set to visit six countries in 2021-2022, culminating in finals in Schonach in Germany in March.

Only one event was possible in the inaugural campaign because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Men’s team competition is scheduled to take place tomorrow in Lillehammer, the host of the 1994 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as another women's event.
