In Group C, played in Innsbruck, Austria, Britain finished as group winners after a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic, to follow up their win over France yesterday.

Britain had to come from behind to win the tie after world number 143 Tomáš Macháč upset Britain’s Dan Evans, the world number 25, defeating him 6-2, 7-5.

World number 12 Cameron Norrie was then taken to three sets by world number 138 Jiri Lehecka, with Norrie winning 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.

In the decisive doubles rubber, Britain secured their place in the knockout stage with Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski winning 6-4, 6-2 over Macháč and Jiri Vesely.

In Group D, played in Turin, Italy, Croatia ended top of the group by beating Hungary 2-1.

After Nino Serdarusic won the opening rubber for Croatia, there was a big upset in the second rubber as world number 282 Zsombor Piros beat world number 30 Marin Čilić, the 2014 US Open champion 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

This took the tie to a deciding doubles rubber won by Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic, who beat Fabian Marozsan and Peter Nagy 7-6, 6-2.

In Group B, played in Madrid, Spain, Kazakhstan finished top of the group after winning 3-0 against Canada.

Mikhail Kukushkin beat Brayden Schnur 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 in the first singles rubber before Alexander Bublik sealed the tie with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Vasek Pospisil.

The whitewash win was sealed in the doubles by Andrey Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov.

In Group F, Germany won their group and secured their place in the last eight by coming from behind to beat Austria 2-1 in Innsbruck.

World number 139 Jurij Rodionov sprung a surprise in the first rubber beating Dominik Koepfer, ranked 54^th in the world, 6-1, 7-5 to put Austria ahead.

Jan-Lennard Struff defeated Dennis Novak 7-6, 6-4 to take the tie to the decisive doubles rubber, which was won in straight sets by Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz, who overcame Oliver Marach and Philipp Oswald 6-3, 6-4.

Group A was the last to conclude as the Russian Tennis Federation (RTF) secured top spot and a quarter-final place after a hard-fought 2-1 win over defending champions Spain, knocking them out of the tournament.

The first rubber saw a big upset as world number 106 Feliciano Lopez overcame world number five Andrey Rublev 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 putting Spain ahead.

World number two Daniil Medvedev levelled the tie for the RTF after defeating Pablo Carreno Busta 6-2, 7-6.

This took the tie to a decisive doubles rubber that went the distance, with Aslan Karatsev and Rublev beating Marcel Granollers and Lopez 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in a match that finished after midnight local time.

In Group E, Italy had already secured top spot before today’s contest between the United States and Colombia.

After the singles matches were shared between the two teams, Colombia took the tie when three games into the decisive doubles rubber American pairing of Reilly Opelka and Jack Sock were forced to retire.

In the quarter-finals Croatia will play Italy and Britain will face Germany, in matches contested between group winners.

In the remaining quarter-finals Group B winners Kazakhstan will take on Serbia, one of the two best runners-up, while Group A winners the Russian Tennis Federation will take on Sweden, the other of the two best runners-up.

The first of the four quarter-finals is scheduled for tomorrow, with Italy up against Croatia in Turin.
