Two karate stars from Málaga have been honoured by their home city at the Spanish Cadet, Junior and Under-21 Championships.

Maria Torres and Damian Quintero were feted by the Andalusian Federation of Karate for their success at the recent Karate World Championships in Dubai - plus in Quintero's case the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Quintero won men's kata silver medals at both events.

Torres is the new world champion in the women's over-68-kilogram kumite class.

Málaga Mayor Francisco de la Torre was among the dignitaries to greet Torres and Quintero, Sur reports.

The duo were also given a commemorative certificate each by the Andalusian Federation of Karate and a painting.

Torres and Quintero are both from Málaga.

Spain enjoyed an impressive Karate World Championships, winning five medals in all.

Only Japan, Italy and Egypt won more medals, but Italy's tally of golds - one - was half that of the Spanish.

More than 700 athletes were taking part in the Spanish Cadet, Junior and Under-21 Championships, with the event held in Málaga.
