Softball Canada chief executive Hugh Mitchener is to step down after more than 24 years in the role.

Mitchener took up the position in September 1997 and will retire in May of next year - four months short of having been chief executive for a quarter of a century.

The growth of the Canadian Championships and softball's presence on the Canada Games programme are among achievements to have taken place on Mitchener's watch.

Softball Canada also highlighted the success of the national teams in the last 24 years.

That included the women's softball team earning a maiden Olympic medal at Tokyo 2020, where they came third.

Canada also won a women's softball gold medal on home soil at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games and have earned bronze medals at each of the last two World Cups.

The men's side have medalled at three World Cups in a row, including a gold in 2015 - the year Softball Canada celebrated its 50th anniversary.

"Hugh has certainly had a remarkable run as CEO," Softball Canada President Scott Neiles said.

"In my four years on the Board of Directors, Hugh has proven to be an honest and straightforward gentleman of great character.

"His calm and caring demeanor has contributed greatly to Softball Canada’s successes over the past 24 years."

A transition process where Mitchener helps Softball Canada adjust and recruit a new chief executive is planned.

"Looking back over the past 24 years, I am so proud of all that our people have been able to accomplish on so many levels," Mitchener added.

"It’s a testament to the passion, skill and teamwork that everyone brings every day to softball, whether it be on the diamond, at clinics, in meeting rooms or in the office.

"I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to work with such a talented group of people."
