Mikaela Shiffrin could take the outright lead for the most Alpine Ski World Cup victories in a single discipline this weekend when the circuit heads to Finnish venue Levi.

Shiffrin has won 45 slalom World Cup legs - one shy of Swedish icon Ingemar Stenmark's all-time single-discipline record, 46 giant slalom wins.

A slalom doubleheader is in store in Levi, tomorrow and on Sunday (November 21).

The 26-year-old American - a two-time Olympic champion and six-time world champion - already has one World Cup win to her name, coming at the season-opening giant slalom race in Sölden.

But slalom is Shiffrin's specialty, and four of those world titles have come in the discipline.

Shiffrin has also won four slalom World Cup races previously in Levi.

Petra Vlhová and Katharina Liensberger could well be Shiffrin's biggest rivals this weekend.

Austria's Liensberger won the slalom crystal globe last season, while Vlhová is the reigning overall World Cup champion and won four slalom races last term.

Andreja Slokar was a surprise winner of last weekend's parallel giant slalom World Cup at Lech-Zürs, and the Sloevenian therefore tops the overall standings heading into Levi.

Shiffrin did not race at Lech-Zürs.
