Chile had Gustavo Gomez to thank as they overcame higher-seeded Puerto Rico 3-2 to advance to the semi-finals of the men’s team event at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Pan American Championships in Peruvian capital Lima.

Gomez proved to be the key man for sixth seeds Chile as he defeated Daniel Gonzalez 4-11, 11-9, 13-11, 11-7 and Brian Afanador 11-13, 20-18, 11-9, 11-7 to set up a thrilling finale.

Juan Lamadrid then held his nerve to beat Gonzalez 11-5, 7-11, 11-8, 11-5 to secure a semi-final meeting with the United States.

Afanador had defeated Lamadrid 11-7, 11-5, 8-11, 11-6 and Angel Naranjo saw off Felipe Olivares 11-8, 11-1, 11-2, but fourth seeds Puerto Rico’s title hopes were extinguished by Chile.

Brazil, who were given a bye into the semi-finals along with the US, will take on Argentina who downed Canada with a 3-0 triumph.

Horacio Cifuentes and Gaston Alto both claimed straight-games wins, beating Matteo Martin 11-6, 11-7, 11-2 and Edward Ly 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 respectively before Santiago Lorenzo came from behind to beat Chen Hongtao 11-4, 13-15, 10-12, 11-7, 11-5.

While Puerto Rico’s men’s team suffered a narrow defeat, the nation’s women’s side crashed to a convincing 3-0 loss in the quarter-finals.

Adriana Díaz, who won the women’s singles title earlier this week, notably did not feature in the Puerto Rican line-up.

The US will meet Brazil in the semi-finals of the women’s team competition, while Canada will face Chile after overcoming Argentina 3-1.

Zhang Mo registered two wins for Canada, defeating Camila Arguelles 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-6 and Ana Codina 24-22, 11-4, 11-6.

Tong May Hui added further success by overcoming Codina 11-9, 11-7, 12-10.

Argentina’s solitary triumph came courtesy of Candela Molero who beat Ivy Liao 11-7, 11-8, 11-6.

Competition is due to conclude tomorrow with the semi-finals and finals of the men’s and women’s team events.
