Thailand’s Chatpong Pongsupamongkon was crowned Audition champion on the opening day of the International Esports Federation (IESF) World Championship Finals here today.

Audition was selected by the IESF as the promoted title of the 13th World Championship Finals back in March, having also held the same status during the online finals last year.

The online rhythm dance game differs from the four official competitions at the World Championship Finals, the DOTA 2, CS:GO, Tekken 7 and eFootball PES Series tournaments.

Audition, published by HanbitSoft, sees players press the arrows displayed on screen and use the spacebar or control key on every fourth beat of the song.

Players are rewarded for their accuracy, which the competition played over several songs as the leaderboard changed.

Pongsupamongkon emerged as the winner of the competition by achieving a score of 27 points across the rounds.

Peru’s Viktor Nieto finished as the runner-up on 24, with Brazil’s Thiara Ramirez Rodrigues placing third on 21.

Competition is taking place in Eilat this year, following the COVID-19 pandemic forcing last year’s event to be held online.

The pandemic has still had an impact on the event, with the Slovakian CS:GO losing a player after a positive COVID-19 test prior to departure to Israel.

A replacement was found in the form of an esports competition winner, who had been due to travel as a spectator to the event.

The Slovakian team have begun the event impressively with a 16-14 win over North Macedonia’s Bluejays, before beating Mexico 16-1.

The results place Slovakia top of Group C on six points, with North Macedonia looking poised to claim the second spot in the playoffs.

Kosovo have three wins to lead Group B in front of Sweden, whose two wins and one loss place them in front of India and Namibia.

Belgium team OneTap have a 100 per cent record in Group A, with EC Kyiv of Ukraine second on six points.
