France's Anthony Jeanjean and Switzerland's Nikita Ducarroz have been crowned European Cycling Union (UEC) BMX Freestyle Park Championships gold medallists following two fiercely contested finals in Moscow.

After the thrilling qualifying stage at the Music Media Dome, Jeanjean prevailed in the men's event with 93 points to prevent Russian duo Irek Rizaev and Konstantin Andreev winning on home soil with 88.33 and 88.16 points, respectively in a sport that made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020.

Britain's Declan Brooks, the bronze medallist at Tokyo 2020 behind Australia's Logan Martin and Venezuela's Daniel Dhers, did not take part.

Brooks' Team GB team-mate Charlotte Worthington, crowned the first Olympic champion in the Japanese capital, was also missing from the women's race in Moscow, leaving the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Ducarroz to triumph in the women's race with 93 points.

The 25-year-old won by a distance ahead of Germany's Lara Lessman.

Lessman posted a score of 84.33 points to claim silver while Spaniard Teresa Fernandez-Miranda Azcoaga did just enough to bag the bronze with 81 points.

"BMX Freestyle Park is a fairly recent discipline which has enjoyed even more success over the last few years, especially after its introduction on the Olympic programme at the last Games in Tokyo 2020," said Enrico Della Casa, President of the UEC.

"The success of the Championships in Moscow in terms of participation, the public and live streaming of the entire event, show that freestyle park is destined to develop even further.

"The Union Européenne de Cyclisme is keen to promote cycling in all its forms and we are certain that this event, which was impeccably organised by the Russian Cycling Federation and its President Viacheslav Ekimov, who I would like to thank, will give the opportunity for many new people to practice this sport and not just in Russia."

A total of 44 riders from 13 countries participated in the event.

"Russian Cycling Federation would like to thank the UEC and the UEC President, Mr. Enrico Della Casa, for the trust and the opportunity to hold the UEC BMX Freestyle Park European Championships here in Moscow, and to show all the perspective, beauty and the dynamics of an absolutely new Olympic discipline - BMX freestyle park," said Ekimov.

"The management of the Russian Cycling Federation sends special thanks to the Department of Sports of Moscow, the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, Moscow Sport, the Rampstroy company and the local Organizing Committee of the Championships, to the judges and teams who came to Moscow in these difficult circumstances associated with Covid-19 pandemic."

The next edition of BMX Freestyle Park European Championships are due to be held in Munich in Germany from August 11 to 13 2022.
