The fourth Gold meeting of this season's World Athletics Cross Country Tour takes place near the northern Spanish city of Burgos as the 17th edition of the Cross Internacional de Atapuerca welcomes some of the strongest runners on the circuit.

Burundi's Rodrigue Kwizera has three consecutive wins in recent weeks and is the favourite in the men's 9,000 metres race.

Now 22, he finished 11th in the World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus two years ago and will be very difficult to beat here.

Ugandans Thomas Ayeko, Joel Ayeko and Hosea Kiplangat will be the threats elsewhere, with Thomas Ayeko pushing Kwizera to the line in San Sebastian.

Joel Ayeko finished fourth in Amorebieta and third in Soria, so looks in good form to gain a medal.

Teenager Abeje Ayana is Ethiopia's best hope with the 18-year-old running the quickest under-20 half marathon this season in Poznan last month in 59 mins 39secs, while Bahrain's Birhanu Balew is more accomplished on the track - sixth in the 5,000m at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics - he could pose a challenge on a good day.

Aron Kifle, Awet Habte and Yemane Hailesilassie are all decent Eritreans who will expect to be near the top of the standings too.

Runner-up in Amorebieta Ouassim Oumaiz and third in San Sebastian, Abdessamad Oukhelfen, are Spain's top hopes, joined by accomplished athletes Adel Mechaal and Carlos Mayo.

Margaret Chelimo, Norah Jeruto, Celliphine Chespol and Beatrice Chebet headline a strong women's field, with the four Kenyans among the favourites in the 8,000m race.

Chelimo is the world 5,000m silver medallist, while Chespol is a strong 3000m steeplechaser, holding the world U20 record in 8:58.78.

Ethiopians Fantu Worku, Fikadu Zenebu and Zerfe Wondemagegn will all be trying to stop a Kenyan sweep of the medals, while Burundi's Francine Niyomukunzi is worth watching too.

European U23 5,000m champion Nadia Battocletti of Italy is on the start list and was seventh in the event too at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
