China’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection says it has established a group to assess preparations for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games to prevent corruption and oversee COVID-19 measures.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection is China’s top anti-corruption body, which has responsibility for investigating possible rule violations.

A statement from the Commission said a special class has been established for Beijing 2022.

The class will reportedly focus on "epidemic prevention and control, selection of fairness, training, and preparation."

"In key areas such as risk resolution and use of funds, we conduct full-point and full-process supervision through listening to reports, on-site investigations and attending meetings, so as to accurately grasp the performance of the resident departments and promote the Party Central Committee’s major decision-making and deployment on the preparation of the Winter Olympics put it in place," a Commission statement read.

The Commission has called on relevant bodies to keep a "close eye on the decision-making, procedures, and management of the use of large funds, and conduct special audits on the use of various preparation funds".

"At the same time, the impact of the domestic and international epidemic situation on preparations for the Winter Olympics will be dynamically studied and judged, and epidemic prevention measures will be further refined," the statement continued.

It is claimed the Commission’s main responsibilities for Beijing 2022 will be ensuring the leadership and command system of the Organising Committee operates effectively during the Games.

The group will also increase on-site supervision and inspections to ensure COVID-19 protocols are enforced for the Games.

It is claimed a supervisory team has visited venues nine times and had resolved several issues.

Work carried out by the Commission regarding Beijing 2022 will reportedly focus on the Government agency, China’s General Administration of Sports, which is responsible for sport in China and oversees the Chinese Olympic Committee.

The financial arm of the body will be assessed, as well as the anti-doping agency.

The Commission is expected to monitor the selection process for Chinese athletes and officials for the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics are scheduled to open on February 4 and conclude on February 20.

The Paralympic Games will follow from March 4 to 13.

Only domestic fans will be permitted to attend the Games due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with no decision yet made regarding the capacity at venues.

The International Olympic Committee are hopeful as many as 20,000 people could attend the Games.

All participants at Beijing 2022 will only be able to travel to approved venues and facilities inside the "closed-loop" management system set to be in place at the Games.
