French rider Simon Delestre claimed an emotional victory at the latest International Equestrian Federation Jumping World Cup Western European League meeting after 16-year-old gelding Hermes Ryan triumphed in a 12 horse jump-off.

From a starting field of 39 horses in Verona, Italy, 13 had clear rounds at the first attempt, although Grandorado TN ridden by Willem Greve of the Netherlands was withdrawn before this stage started.

Hermes Ryan negotiated the jump-off course in a time of 37.32 seconds, and with one competitor left, it proved more than enough to take victory.

Second place went to Kendra Claricia Brinkop of Germany and her 11-year-old mare Kastelle Memo, who enjoyed a clear jump-off round as they finished in 37.80sec.

In third place was Ireland’s Denis Lynch onboard 15-year-old gelding GC Chopin’s Bushi, recording a clear round and finishing in 38.62sec.

Germany’s Christian Kukuk, riding Checker, finished fourth in 73.80 with the top five, and the last of the clear rounds, completed by Sweden’s Jens Fredricson, riding Markan Cosmopolit in 74.01.

In sixth place was the horse that posted the fastest time in the jump-off Don Juan von de Donkhoeve, ridden by Jessica Springsteen of the United States.

The horse completed the course in 36.83sec but knocked down the last fence with victory in its grasp.

A dramatic jump-off also saw Colombian rider Carlos Enrique Lopez Lizarazo hospitalised with a suspected shoulder injury, after taking a tumble on Admara.

Kevin Jochems of the Netherlands leads the season’s standings on 30 points following three rounds, with Fredricson second on 27 points and Kukuk in third on 25 points.
