Anguilla is hoping a larger Commonwealth Games team can help provide its kit for Birmingham 2022 next year.

Cardigan Connor, the small Caribbean island's Chef de Mission for the Games, said one current plan was to re-use gear athletes wore at Gold Coast 2018.

"It's been tough for us in the past to find sponsorship, it's even more difficult now with COVID," he told insidethegames.

"Shorts and tracksuits the athletes would have worn at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast is what they are thinking of giving to other athletes now.

"I don't think that's quite right.

"The uniform belongs to the team per se, your Chef de Mission can tell you how to wear it and the like and when to wear it.

"But I think that should be a souvenir for those athletes.

"For the ones going to the next Games, they really should have their own personal kit.

"We should try our best to make that happen."

The men's 100 metres final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics featured a man from Anguilla, with Zharnel Hughes lining up for Britain before being disqualified for a false start.

There could soon be more anguish for the sprinter with the Tokyo silver he won as part of the 4x100 metres relay team at risk due to CJ Ujah's positive drugs test.

"Having Zharnel out there in the finals of the Olympics, running well, he's a role model here and a local hero," said Connor, a former cricketer with Hampshire who took more than 1,000 wickets across all formats.

"What the Anguillan youngsters can see, and what the coaches can see, is that there is a path to the very top, to mix it with the best in the world."
