Kraków City Council President Jacek Majchrowski has revealed that agreement has yet to be reached with the Polish Government over financial guarantees for the 2023 European Games, with the next update expected before November 11.

The Kraków City Council was expected to decide today on whether it would remain a host for the third edition of the Games.

Kraków has yet to sign the Host City Contract for the Games, with authorities awaiting confirmation of funding for key projects.

The Polish Government has been discussing a draft law outlining their level of financial support, which could pave the way for the signing of the contract by Kraków and Małopolska.

The Kraków City Council passed a resolution last month which indicated the city could withdraw as a host of the Games, should funding guarantees not be received by the end of October.

A decision has not yet been taken on whether to withdraw as a host to date, despite Majchrowski informing the Kraków City Council at its session today that agreement has yet to be reached with the Government.

The city is seeking financial guarantees and organisational support for the event.

Majchrowski announced that talks are planned to take place on Friday (November 5) and an update expected prior to Poland’s Independence Day on November 11.

"We are very eager for the Games to take place, but they cannot be organised at the expense of the inhabitants of Kraków," Majchrowski said, according to Polish newspaper Dziennik Polski.

"After Friday's talks we will know if we are standing.

"Something specific can be said before Independence Day.

"n July 2021, Deputy Prime Minister Sasin was in Kraków, later I was at a meeting with him and we talked about Government guarantees.

"I said that the Games could not be held at the expense of the inhabitants of Krakow.

"We have agreed that part of the special act on the Games will be a regulation of the Council of Ministers, in which investments will be entered.

"I asked Deputy Prime Minister Sasin to prepare such a special act as soon as possible."

Funding for the European Games is expected to surpass PLN1 billion (£186 million/$250 million/€216 million) and, if the Stadion Wisły Kraków im. Henryka Reymana is to be used - the 32,000-capacity home of football club Wisła Kraków - conversion costs are expected to reach PLN60 million (£11.1 million/$15 million/€13 million).

The venue could host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, it has been suggested, but Kozłowski admitted he would prefer the 15,030-seat Tauron Arena to host the Opening Ceremony over the larger stadium.

Kraków and the Małopolska region was unanimously chosen as host of the 2023 European Games, as the sole candidate on the shortlist.

Back in February, the European Olympic Committees said it was confident Kraków would sign the contract and in June said it hoped a deal would be struck within a month, but the binding document remains unsigned.

The 2023 European Games are scheduled to take place from June 21 to July 3 in 2023.

Despite uncertainty over the Host City Contract, the sport programme for the Games has taken shape.

Archery, 3x3 basketball, badminton, beach handball, beach soccer, boxing, breaking, canoeing, cycling, fencing, judo, karate, modern pentathlon, muaythai, kickboxing, padel, shooting, ski jumping, sport climbing, table tennis, taekwondo, teqball and triathlon are among confirmed sports.

The European Athletics Team Championships was added to the programme last week.
