Azerbaijan's Sports Minister Farid Gayibov made a visit to the country's taekwondo team in Baku.

He watched members of the national squad as they trained and held talks with Naghi Safarov, the executive vice-president of the Azerbaijan Taekwondo Federation.

Topics discussed included competitions, young athletes and plans for the future.

Safarov also informed Gayibov about the activities of the federation.

Gayibov was appointed as Azerbaijan's Sports Minister in September and is also the President of European Gymnastics.

He is challenging incumbent Morinari Watanabe for the International Gymnastics Federation Presidency at the organisation's Congress in Antalya in Turkey, which is due to take place between November 5 and 7.

Earlier this month, Gayibov insisted that he would be able to manage as both Sports Minister and FIG President, if he is elected.

Azerbaijan failed to win a taekwondo medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, after Radik Isayev struck gold in the men's heavyweight division at Rio 2016.

Milad Beigi is the reigning world champion in the men's middleweight class.

The country's training facility is said to include state-of-the-art equipment, with more than 500 black belt holders being produced there.
