Just three seeded players remain in the men's singles draw at the World Table Tennis (WTT) event in Tunis, although the top two ranked players Patrick Franziska of Germany and Nigeria's Quadri Aruna booked their place in the quarter-finals at the Sports Hall of Radès in the Tunisian capital.

Four seeds, including Portugal's world number 24 Marcos Freitas WTT Contender Budapest winner Truls Moregard of Sweden, fell on a day of upsets as the round of 32 got underway yesterday.

Germany's Ruwen Filus, seeded seventh, became another first-round casualty today as Poland's Jakub Dyjas twice came from behind to win their clash 8-11, 12-10, 6-11, 11-8, 11-5.

Dyjas then beat France's Emmanuel Lebesson in straight games to set up a tie with Aruna in the last eight.

The Nigerian second seed got his tournament underway as he came from a game down to beat Sweden's Jon Persson 9-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-4, and cruised past Portugal's João Monteiro 11-7, 12-10, 11-4 to reach the quarter-finals.

Top seed Franziska needed five games to get past Portugal's Tiago Apolónia yesterday, and four in his round-of-16 match against Russia's Maksim Grebnev as he progressed 11-8, 6-11, 11-2, 12-10.

Filip Zeljko of Croatia awaits him in the last eight after he saw off Brazil's Vitor Ishiy 13-11, 11-9, 11-6.

Eighth seed Sathiyan Gnanasekaran of India joins them in the quarter-finals after a comfortable 11-6, 11-9, 11-9 victory against Senegal's Ibrahima Diaw.

The world number 37 will play Dang Qiu of Germany after he beat France's Enzo Angles, who knocked out Freitas yesterday, in straight games 11-5, 11-8, 11-8.

The other quarter-final is Romania's Ovidiu Ionescu against Sweden's Anton Källberg after they both won in straight games against German players Kay Stumper and Fanbo Meng respectively in the round of 16.

Austria's world number 16 Sofia Polcanova - the top-ranked player in Tunis - had to recover from losing the first game 11-5 to Russian player Mariia Tailakova, but took the next three games 11-7, 11-5, 11-8 to advance to a last-eight tie with Daria Trigolos of Belarus.

Trigolos upset the seventh seed, Polina Mikhailova of Russia, in a five-game clash.

Puerto Rico's Adriana Díaz, seeded second, beat Sweden's Linda Bergström 11-6, 11-9, 10-12, 11-5, and will face Portugal's Shao Jieni in the last eight as she beat Brazil's Bruna Takahashi in a match that went the distance.

Monaco's Xiaoxin Yang, the winner at the WTT Contender event in Budapest, overcame Spain's María Xiao 11-8, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7 in the round of 16.

The third seed will play France's Prithika Pavade after she recorded an impressive straight-games 12-10, 12-10, 11-4 victory over Egyptian fifth seed Dina Meshref.

Fourth seed Nina Mittelham cruised through her tie against Hungary's Dora Madarasz 11-8, 11-4, 11-8, and will face Hana Matelova of the Czech Republic in the next round after the eighth seed beat Sweden's Christina Källberg 11-8, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8.
