The draw for the men’s 2021 European Wheelchair Basketball Championship Division A has taken place in Madrid, with host nation Spain given the opportunity to choose which group they were placed in.

The top five men’s teams at the event will qualify automatically for the 2022 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships, scheduled to be held in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates in November 2022.

The draw, overseen by International Wheelchair Basketball Federation vice-president Fernando Zappile, saw 12 teams paired based on their previous rankings.

After five pairs were drawn, Spain, as hosts, were then given the opportunity to choose the group they were placed in, with defending champions Britain put in the other group.

Spain chose to go into Group A, alongside France, Lithuania, Poland, Germany and Switzerland, leaving Britain in Group B with Austria, Israel, the Netherlands, Italy and Turkey.

The top four teams in each group will advance to the quarter-finals.

The women’s European Championship Division A operates in a round-robin format, with six teams - Spain, France, Turkey, holders The Netherlands, Britain and Germany - competing for semi-final places in the competition.

The top four teams in the women’s competition will automatically qualify for next year’s World Championships.

A joint event for the men’s and women’s European Wheelchair Basketball Championship Division A is scheduled to take place in Madrid from December 4 to 12.

Matches are due to be played across two venues in Madrid - the Centro Deportivo Municipal Marques de Samaranch and Centro Deportivo Municipal Francisco Fernandez Ochoa.

The previous European Wheelchair Basketball Championships were held in 2019, with Britain winning the men’s event in Walbryzch in Poland, defeating Spain 77-52.

The women’s competition took place in Rotterdam and saw hosts The Netherlands beat Britain 65-52 to triumph.
