Third seed Marcos Freitas of Portugal was among the casualties on a day of shocks as the action got underway in the main draw of the men's singles at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender event in Tunis.

After falling behind 11-9 to France's Enzo Angles, Freitas put himself within a game of victory at the Sports Hall of Radès in the Tunisian capital after taking the following two games 12-10 and 11-0.

However, Angles hit back to take the final two games 11-7 and knock out the world number 24.

Germany's Dang Qiu will be his opponent in the round of 16 after he beat Russia's Kirill Skachkov 11-8, 8-11, 12-10, 11-5.

The world number 15, Tokyo 2020 Olympics men's team silver medallist and top seed Patrick Franziska of Germany had to survive a real scare against Portuguese player Tiago Apolónia.

Franziska twice fell behind, but recovered to go through 8-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7, 11-7.

Sweden's Truls Moregard triumphed in the men's singles at the WTT Contender Budapest in August, becoming the second-youngest player to win a men's singles title at a WTT Series event aged just 19.

However, he twice blew a lead in a defeat to Maksim Grebnev, with the Russian going on to face Franziska after winning 8-11, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10, 11-6.

Moregard's compatriot Anton Källberg caused another upset on the first day of the main draw as he eliminated Austrian fourth seed Robert Gardos 11-9, 11-3, 9-11, 14-12.

Germany's Fanbo Meng awaits the Swede in the next round after he beat Bence Majoros of Hungary over five games 8-11, 12-10, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9.

Fifth seed Sharath Kamal Achanta of India was also toppled in the round of 32 as Vitor Ishiy of Brazil triumphed 5-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-8, 12-10.

His reward is a tie against Filip Zeljko of Croatia after he saw off Paraguay's Marcelo Aguirre in straight games 12-10, 11-6, 11-8.

Slovakia's Yang Wang was another seeded player to lose as Germany's Kay Stumper came out on top 11-7, 11-6, 9-11, 6-11, 12-10.

Ovidiu Ionescu of Romania will be his next opponent after he came from two games down to beat Croatia's Frane Kojic 8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-7.

Eighth seed Sathiyan Gnanasekaran of India had a better day than some of the higher ranked players as he secured a trio of 11-9 games to defeat Spain's Álvaro Robles to progress in straight games to a round-of-16 tie against Senegal's Ibrahima Diaw after he also beat Belgium's Martin Allegro without dropping a game.

Four more round-of-32 matches are due to be played tomorrow, including Nigeria's second seed and world number 16 Quadri Aruna against Jon Persson, the Swede who is ranked 44th in the world.

The seeded players fared better in the women's singles draw, as all those in action today progressed.

India's world number 58 Manika Batra was the most notable casualty of the day as Germany's fourth seed and world number 33 Nina Mittelham beat her 11-6, 10-12, 11-8, 11-3.

Dora Madarasz of Hungary will be her round-of-16 opponent as she came from behind to triumph 8-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9 against Italy's Debora Vivarelli.

Top seed Sofia Polcanova, the Austrian ranked 16th in the world, eased past Italy's Giorgia Piccolin 11-8, 11-6, 11-5, setting up a match against Mariia Tailakova of Russia in the next round as she beat Amelie Solja of Austria in straight games.

Second seed Adriana Diaz of Puerto Rico also cruised through 11-6, 11-7, 11-7 against France's Leili Mostafavi, with Sweden's Linda Bergström standing in her way of a place in the quarter-finals as she overcame Marie Migot of France.

WTT Contender Budapest winner Xiaoxin Yang of Monaco is seeded third in Tunis but had to come from two games down to see off France's Jia Nan Yuan 8-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-9.

Egyptian fifth seed Dina Meshref enjoyed a comfortable day with an 11-8, 11-3, 11-4 win against India's Selena Selvakumar, and so too did Russia's seventh seed Polina Mikhailova, who defeated France's Audrey Zarif 11-5, 11-5, 12-10.

Daria Trigolos of Belarus will face Mikhailova in the next round after she beat Germany's Yuan Wan in straight games.

Hana Matelova of the Czech Republic was the final seeded player in action today, and she cruised past Swiss player Rachel Moret 11-5, 11-5, 11-7 to book her place in the round of 16 against Sweden's Christina Källberg.

Källberg overcame Luxembourg's Sarah De Nutte in four games.

The round of 32 draws to a close tomorrow, with Brazil's Bruna Takahashi the last seeded player in action as she plays Puerto Rico's Melanie Díaz.
