Munich 2022 has unveiled the target as part of its sustainability concept for the Championships, entitled "Count & Last".

The Organising Committee has promised to keep CO2 emissions linked to the event "as low as possible".

It said emissions will be calculated and offset through its deal with ClimatePartner, which includes contributing to a reforestation project in Nicaragua.

Organisers will have launched 12 projects between last month and the start of the Championships under the second pillar of its concept.

This includes a scheme which features constructing ramps out of Lego bricks to provide greater accessibility for wheelchair users.

The latest project - "From Routes to Roots" - encourages members who use the Strava fitness tracking application to record runs, walks, cycles and rowing activities.

The number of kilometres generated will be converted into trees planted.

Organisers have also pointed to how most of the sports on the programme for the Championships will be staged at existing venues, including those used when Munich hosted the 1972 Olympic Games.

"Sustainability is one of the core values of the multi-sport European Championships," said Board chairman Libor Varhaník.

"For all stakeholders, ensuring Munich 2022 is environmentally sustainable - the use of the city's sporting infrastructure minimising environmental impact - is a key element in the overall philosophy underpinning the event.

"The staging of a major event like this has provided Munich with the opportunity to carry out the initiatives outlined that will continue the legacy from Berlin/Glasgow 2018, through Munich 2022, and onto future editions of the European Championships in 2026 and beyond."
