Eight matches were played on the first day of the men's competition as the World Curling Federation (WCF) Pre-Olympic Qualification Event for the Beijing 2022 Games continued in the Turkish city of Erzurum.

In the first session of the day, Lin Ting-Li's Chinese Taipei defeated Michael Kraehenbuehl's Brazil 10-2, crucially stealing a total of seven points over three ends.

Ugurcan Karagoz's Turkey smashed Danil Dmitriev's Kyrgyzstan 14-5 with three strong ends, while Lukas Klima's Czech Republic thrashed Harold Woods III's Nigeria 15-1.

Kristof Czermann's Hungary were kept honest until late in their match with Gernot Higatzberger's Austria, winning 9-5.

Kalle Kiiskinen's Finland defeated Stefan Sever's Slovenia 7-3 in the evening session and Kriss Vonda's Latvia won 8-4 against Juraj Gallo's Slovakia.

Eduard Veltsman's Estonia handed out the biggest defeat of the evening, beating Valentin Gheorghe Anghelinei's Romania 13-1.

Finally, Sergio Vez's Spain beat Timo Verreycken's Belgium 7-1.

Men's competition continues tomorrow, with women's qualifying matches also commencing.

Two men's and two women's spots are to be determined at the Pre-Olympic Qualification Event, with the top teams from this competition qualifying for the next stage in Leeuwarden in The Netherlands in December.

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics are scheduled to take place from February 4 to 20 2022.
