Azerbaijan's Rafig Huseynov built on his bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to clinch gold in the under-82 kilogram division on the first day of Greco-Roman finals at the United World Wrestling (UWW) World Championships in Oslo.

Huseynov won his quarter-final and semi-final by a point, and did so again in the gold medal bout against Turkey's Burhan Akbudak, triumphing 2-1.

Pejman Soltanmorad Poshtam of Iran beat Hungary's László Szabó 4-0 to earn one of the bronze medals, with the other going to the Russian Wrestling Federation's (RWF) European champion Adlan Akiev courtesy of an 8-0 victory over Alex Michel Bjurberg Kessidis of Sweden.

The RWF was involved in the day's other three finals, but only Roman Vlasov earned a title as he overcame Azerbaijan's Sanan Suleymanov 2-1 in the under-77kg.

An Iranian wrestler also beat a Hungarian opponent in one of the bronze medal bouts in this weight division - Mohammadali Abdolhamid Geraei claimed a 9-0 victory by superiority over Tamas Lévai, while Roland Schwarz of Germany won 10-5 against Belarus' Tsimur Berdyieu in the other.

The under-55kg event was won by Japan's Ken Matsui as he saw off Emin Narimanovitch Sefershaev 7-1.

Former world champion Eldaniz Azizli of Azerbaijan earned a second successive bronze with a 5-2 triumph over Turkey's Ekrem Öztürk, with Nugzari Tsurtsumia of Georgia rounding off the podium courtesy of a 9-0 victory by superiority against Armenian Norayr Hakhoyan.

Lithuania's Kristupas Šleiva notched a 10-1 victory by superiority over Iran's Mohammad Reza Hojatollah Mokhtari to take bronze, with Poland's Gevorg Sahakyan defeating Cengiz Arslan to finish joint third.

Tomorrow features three Greco-Roman finals in the under-60kg, under-97kg and over-130kg.

Georgia's Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Iakobi Kajaia had been the favourite in the latter category, but lost his semi-final 2-1 to Zurabi Gedekhauri, with the RWF going up against Iran's Aliakbar Hossein Yousofiahmadchali for gold.

An Olympic bronze medallist in Iran's Mohammadhadi Abdollah Saravi reached the under-97kg final against Hungary's Alex Gergo Szőke, while Moldova's Victor Ciobanu will face Zholaman Sharshenbekov of Kyrgyzstan for the under-60kg title.

The under-63kg, under-67kg and under-87kg Greco Roman events also get underway in tomorrow's penultimate day of action in Oslo.
