The FINA Reform Committee brought about the changes which will overhaul the governance, communication, marketing, gender equity, events, athlete safeguarding, sport medicine and sport development of the governing body.

The committee was formed by President Husain Al-Musallam on June 5, the date of his election, and is chaired by François Carrard.

Carrard presented the outcome of its investigations in a two-day meeting that concluded yesterday.

It is claimed the whole business model of the FINA was broken down and recommendations were proposed following the conclusion of the assessment.

"Today marks an important milestone for FINA towards the reinforcement of its commitment to authenticity, transparency and reform," said Carrard.

"The Reform Committee reached a consensus on several key measures to be adopted as part of the change led by FINA President Al-Musallam.

"The recommendations will be presented by the Reform Committee at the upcoming FINA Congress.

"They will enhance the current business model of FINA and lead to a more contemporary and transparent governing body."

It is said the initiative will take FINA's six disciplines – swimming, water polo, diving, high diving, open water and artistic swimming - into a new era.

"After months of study, the Reform Committee has done a great service to FINA by laying out the path towards the reforms," said Reform Committee member and former world champion swimmer Britta Kamrau.

"Now FINA must implement these sustainable changes and build a stronger organisation for the future to better serve its athletes."

Reform suggestions will be presented to the FINA members at the FINA Congress, which is due to take place at the beginning of the FINA World Swimming Championship and Aquatics Festival in Abu Dhabi from December 16 to 21 this year.
