Axel Mazella of France will be aiming to defend his lead at the top of the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) KiteFoil World Series standings, at the third round in Cagliari, Italy.

Formula Kite European champion Mazella, who triumphed at the season’s previous round in Traunsee, Austria, in September, sits top of the standings with 597 points.

Hot on his heels is Russia’s Denis Taradin with 591 points in second, with fellow Frenchman Theo de Ramecourt in third place on 588.

In an interview with Ksurf magazine Mazella said: "I’m pretty happy about my leadership in the IKA KiteFoil World Series ranking.

"Cagliari is a nice place for racing - I’ve been there already four times in my life, and I’ve always enjoyed this place.

"So I’m super excited about the competition with the other guys, and I hope we’re going to have some good wind."

Separate men’s and women’s races are held, but with athletes competing all in one fleet, the season standings are combined, meaning France’s Poeme Newland is the top female in the rankings, placed tenth with 447 points.

Newland has a lead of 69 points over her closest challenger, compatriot Lauriane Nolot, who won the women’s race in Traunsee, who sits 13th in the overall rankings on 378 points.

The competition in Cagliari is the only five-star event of the series, with 500 points and €25,000 (£21,300/$29,300) on offer.

The final two rounds of the World Series are both scheduled to take place in Spain - at Fuarteventura in November and Gran Canaria in December.

Registration is due to take place tomorrow, before the first of four scheduled days of racing is set to begin on Thursday (October 7).
