Mexico made it into the final of the 2021 Under-23 Baseball World Cup in remarkable fashion after beating Colombia 3-2 to leapfrog their opponents into the final qualification spot at the Estadio Sonora in Hermosillo.

The hosts took the lead in the sixth inning through a Tirso Ornelas home run before pitcher Juan Robles produced a shutout in the seventh and final frame to secure the victory.

The result relegates Colombia to the bronze medal game where it will play Cuba.

Venezuela await Mexico in the gold medal match following a routine 5-2 win over Chinese Taipei as it looks to better a third-place finish in the 2018 edition.

Cuba rallied from behind three times against Panama to steal the last bronze medal match berth with a remarkable 9-8 win.

At the midway mark, Panama looked to be cruising to victory after developing a 5-0 lead before the Cubans equalised with a stunning five-run innings in the bottom of the fourth.

However, they were 8-6 down going into the final inning but with one out and the bases loaded, Rangel Ramos scored on a wild pitch before Yuddiel Gonzalez sent his team into rapture with a walk-off single to cap an extraordinary performance.

Elsewhere in the consolation round, Nicaragua continued its 100 per cent record with a 3-1 win against Germany.

South Korea secured eighth place after downing Czech Republic 6-4 and the Dominican Republic beat the Netherlands 2-1 at the Estadio Yaquis in Ciudad Obregón.
