Jonathan Cayco and Chandler Babb secured more success for the Virgin Islands at the International Powerlifting Federation World Open Classic Championships in Halmstad.

After Russel Orhii registered two world records on his way to winning the men’s 83-kilogram crown yesterday, Cayco and Babb put the Virgin Islands at the top of the podium again in the Swedish city.

Cayco also notched a world record with a lift of 238kg in bench press as he captured the men’s 93kg title.

As well as his stunning bench press showing, Cayco lifted 292.5kg in squat and 342.5kg in deadlift to total 873kg.

Sweden’s Gustav Hedlund was clear in second with 857.5kg as Bulgaria’s Emil Krastev saw off compatriot Teodor Radev to seal bronze with 837.5kg.

Marte Kjenner of Norway notched a world record squat of 192kg in the women’s 69kg class, but it was not enough to beat Babb, who won by 5.5kg.

Babb recorded 187.5kg in squat, 112.5kg bench press and 230kg to claim a winning total of 530kg.

Kjenner had to settle for silver with 524.5kg, while bronze went to Italy’s Sara Mazzantini who recorded 515kg.

Brazil’s Ana Castellain finished with the same score, but Mazzantini claimed third spot based on body weight.

There was a record-breaking performance from Canadian Jessica Buettner in the women’s 76kg class.

Buettner produced a world record total of 568kg after breaking records in the deadlift with 247.5kg and squat with 210.5kg, as well as a strong showing in the bench press with 105kg.

Italy’s Francesca Parrello was a distant second with 522.5kg, while Joyce Gail Reboton of the Philippines bagged bronze with 497.5kg.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow with the men’s 105kg and women’s 84kg categories.
