Next year's International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) 100 kilometre World Championships will be held in the German capital Berlin and nearby Bernau, while Sotillo de la Adrada in Spain and the Australian capital Canberra will host upcoming continental championships, it has been announced.

The 2022 100km World Championships are scheduled for August 27, starting and finishing in Bernau, which is home to one of three German Bauhaus United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites.

The event will be organised by the German Ultramarathon Union and German Athletics Association.

Berlin and Bernau have previously played host to a 100-mile race along the former Berlin Wall, as well as events covering 50km and 100km and a 24 hour competition.

The IAU 100km World Championships were cancelled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, last running in 2018 in Sveti Martin na Muri in Croatia.

This is the IAU's flagship event, with the distance and world records recognised by World Athletics.

Sotillo de la Adrada, a municipality in the Ávila province, will play host to next year's IAU 50km European Championships.

These will be organised by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation, Diputación de Ávila, Sotillo de la Adrada Town Council and Ecodeporte Sports Club.

The IAU expects more than 30 Federations to be represented at the Championships scheduled for October 8 2022, and an open competition will also be available with limited entry places.

Looking further ahead, the IAU 24-hour Asia and Oceania Championships will be organised by the Australian Ultra Runners Association alongside an Organising Committee in Canberra.

This will take place on the Australian Institute of Sport track.

The IAU governs race events with distances longer than the 42.2km for a marathon, and runs four major World Championships as well as continental championships in the 100km and 24-hour disciplines.
