China got their defence of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Sudirman Cup off to a flying start with a comprehensive 5-0 victory over hosts Finland.

The 11-time champions did not drop a game across the five matches as they announced their intent in the mixed team competition in Vantaa.

Wang Yi Lyu and Huang Dong Ping set the tone with a 21-3, 21-9 thrashing of Anton Kaisti and Jenny Nystrom in the mixed doubles.

This was followed by impressive wins in the singles with Lu Guangzu beating Kalle Koljonen 21-16, 21-19 and He Bing Jiao seeing off Nella Nyqvist 21-10, 21-6.

The rout was completed when He Ji Ting and Tan Qiang downed Kaisti and Jesper Paul 21-4, 21-14 and Chen Qinq Chen and Jia Yi Fan defeated Mathilda Lingholm and Nystrom.

Despite the heavy loss in the Group A opener, Nystrom said he enjoyed the atmosphere inside the Energia Arena.

"They’re so good that it’s impossible to do anything when we’re at our level," said Nystrom.

"But it was really nice to play, the audience was nice and cheering, so that’s felt really good.

"I have not experienced this kind of audience cheering for me, so that was such a great experience.

"It’s an honour to be in the team and hopefully get younger players to see the sport and experience what it could be.

"It’s nice to show this is the real badminton, this is the level in the world. Even though we have been the best [mixed doubles pair] in Finland, this match showed our level in the world."
