Nina Mittelham and Patrick Franziska secured a German double at the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) Europe Top 16 Cup as they clinched the women's and men's singles titles in Thessaloniki in Greece.

Mittelham overcame Portugal's Fu Yu 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 11-3, 14-12 in the gold medal match.

"This victory is so important for me," Mittelham said afterwards.

"For some time I am always close, but now I finally won the title.

"It means so much to me for the future and for the European Championships.

"Fu was strong today, but I felt very well and I had full control."

The German player overcame Czech Republic's Hana Matelova in straight games 11-2, 11-4, 11-8, 11-8 in the semi-finals.

She earlier had to come from behind to go the distance to beat Slovakia's Barbora Balazova 7-11, 11-9, 10-12, 12-10, 11-9, 5-11, 11-7 in the first round, but then knocked out top seed Sofia Polcanova of Austria 11-3, 11-7, 8-11, 13-11, 11-8 in the quarter-finals on day one.

The men's singles final saw Franziska in outstanding form to clinch a win against Marcos Freitas of Portugal.

The champion triumphed 12-10, 11-8, 11-6, 11-13, 11-5, and admitted afterwards that he was at his very best in the gold medal match.

"This was my best performance at the tournament," Franziska said.

"We played fantastic rallies, but at the end all comes to small points and there I was much better today."

He overcame the top seed Mattias Falck of Sweden earlier in the day to reach the final, staving off a potential fightback from his opponent to win 11-8, 11-8, 13-11, 6-11, 9-11, 11-8.

As women's champion Mittelham did, Franziska had to overcome a real scare against Austrian opposition in the first round, winning the deciding game against Daniel Habesohn 11-8, 11-5, 7-11, 11-7, 4-11, 9-11, 19-17.

He then beat his compatriot Ruwen Filus 9-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6, 11-5.
