Hosts Dominican Republic beat three-time champions the United States to qualify for the semi-finals in top spot at the Women's Volleyball Pan American Cup in Santo Domingo.

Dominican Republic recorded a comfortable 25-22, 25-15, 25-12 victory to complete the opening phase of the tournament with a 100 per cent record.

Gaila Gonzalez was the star of the show for the Dominican team as she racked up 14 points in another superb individual display.

The win set up a semi-final meeting with Canada, who finished fourth in the group, while the US will take on Mexico.

"The team played very well in overall - service, reception and blocking," said Dominican Republic head coach Marcos Kwiek.

"We were able to give the younger players a chance to catch the rhythm of these kinds of competitions.

"Now to focus on tomorrow's game."

Mexico took third place in the four-team group after edging out Canada in a five-set thriller.

The Mexican side, led by Maria Rodriguez's 23 points, overcame Canada 26-24, 22-25, 25-22, 17-25, 15-12.

"Now we are going to focus on the semi-finals because Mexico came for a medal and we are going to look for it," said Mexico's coach Rafael Petry.

The tournament is due to continue tomorrow.
