Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) treasurer Frederick Acheampong has been named as the country's Chef de Mission for next summer's Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Acheampong - a member of the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association and chairman of the Management Committee of the Ghana Olympic Football Team, the Black Meteors - has also worked in England previously, which is said to have played a part in his appointment.

The Executive Board of the GOC approved the proposal for Acheampong to lead the Ghanian cohort in Birmingham by the Games Committee, led by Ghana Taekwondo President Frederick Lartey Otu.

University of Ghana's sports chief Dr Bello Bella Bitugu was also nominated to steer the country's efforts at the upcoming Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, scheduled to begin on February 4.

The Commonwealth Games are set to begin on July 28 2022, running to August 8 2022.

Since making its debut in the 1954 Commonwealth Games, Ghana has won 58 medals.

Its best Games came at Kingston 1966, when it won nine medals, five of which were gold.

At Gold Coast 2018, Ghana won just one bronze medal, Jessie Lartey in the men's 64 kilograms boxing.
