Italy’s Sonny Colbrelli has won the Benelux Tour for Bahrain Victorious, while Slovenian team mate Matej Mohorič won the final stage in Geraardsbergen in Belgium to secure second place in the general classification.

The 180.9-kilometre final stage began in Namur, and saw Mohorič, who won two stages at this year’s Tour de France and triumphed at this event in 2018, ride to victory in 3 hrs 50 mins 56sec.

Colbrelli had taken over the leader’s jersey yesterday with a solo victory on stage six, and came through in second - 11 seconds behind Mohorič - to win the general classification.

Mohorič ensured Bahrain Victorious occupied the top two positions as he was 29 seconds further back.

Qhubeka NextHash’s Victor Campenaerts of Belgium rounded off the podium, finishing 21st in the final stage among a group of riders who were 24 seconds behind Mohorič.

Campenaerts completed the tour one minute and 14 seconds slower than Colbrelli.

Another Belgian rider in Tim Wellens of Lotto-Soudal finished fourth in the general classification 12 seconds off the top three, while Switzerland’s Stefan Küng of Groupama-FDJ was a further two seconds back and Australia’s Luke Durbridge of Team BikeExchange another two seconds slower.

The 2017 winner Tom Dumoulin finished third on the final stage, 15 seconds behind Mohorič.

Dutch rider Danny van Poppel of Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux won the points classification on the final day as he picked up an additional 15 points to take his total up to 88.

Tim Merlier of Alpecin-Fenix and Belgium had led with 75 points going into the final day, but slipped to third after failing to pick up any today.

Colbrelli also finished second in the points classification after claiming 25 today to finish on 80.
