Russian duo Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev continue to march on in the US Open with dominant displays in the men's singles second round at Flushing Meadows in New York.

Second seed Medvedev was too powerful for Germany's Dominik Koepfer, winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 in a rematch of their 2019 meeting in the tournament.

The six foot six inch player was helped by his characteristically formidable serve as he smashed eight aces and won 80 per cent of points on his first serve.

His compatriot Rublev eventually put Spain's Pedro Martínez to one side 7-6, 6-7, 6-1, 6-1.

Fifth seed Rublev could have finished the match much earlier to preserve some energy but squandered nine break points.

World number three Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece reached the third round with a four-set victory against France’s Adrian Mannarino, triumphing 6-3, 6-4, 6-7, 6-0.

Tsitsipas was criticised by his British opponent Andy Murray after taking a lengthy mid-match toilet trip, and faced jeers from the crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium following another break of more than seven minutes after losing the third set.

The French Open runner-up insisted afterwards: "I haven’t done anything wrong."

During the match itself, he notched a career high 27 aces.

Play between Argentina’s 11th seed Diego Schwartzman and South Africa’s Kevin Anderson was suspended at the start of the second set after rain began leaking into the Louis Armstrong Stadium despite the roof being closed.

New York City has declared a state of emergency after being hit by the tropical storm Ida.

Play resumed at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Schwartzman defeated 2017 finalist Anderson 7-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Félix Auger-Aliassime of Canada overcame a strong first-set challenge from Martínez's countryman Bernabe Zapata Miralles, going on to win 7-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Britain's Dan Evans hit 39 winners to see off the United States' Marcos Giron 6-4, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3.

In the upset of the round, eighth seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud was blown away by qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

Ruud was not the only seeded player to be dumped out; 14th seed Alex de Minaur was humbled 7-6, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 by American Taylor Fritz on the Louis Armstrong Stadium court.

Bulgarian 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov was losing 7-6, 7-6, 4-0 before retiring due to injury, giving Australia's Alexei Popyrin victory.

Despite the Chilean taking the first set comfortably, 16th seed Cristian Garín faltered against Switzerland's Henri Laaksonen 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, 6-4, despite being positioned over 100 places above him in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings.

Tomorrow’s schedule has been revised in light of the weather conditions in New York, but German Olympic champion Alexander Zverev is due to face Spain’s Albert Ramos Viñolas, and Serbia’s world number one Novak Djokovic is set to play The Netherlands' Tallon Griekspoor in the top half of the second round draw.
