Jette Simon took the gold medal in the women's scratch race final at the International Cycling Union (UCI) 2021 Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Cairo in Egypt with a blistering average speed of 42.17 kilometres per hour.

The German was sensational over the 30 laps, finishing in 10 minutes 39 seconds and was trailed by Belgium's Marith Vanhove and Valentina Basilico of Italy in the only final of the day.

In the men's team sprint Malaysia defeated Kazakhstan in heat one of the first round while Poland and the Russian Federation comfortably outpaced the Czech Republic and Saudi Arabia respectively.

Germany was given a bye to the final after it set the quickest time in the qualifying round.

The team, featuring Luca Spiegel, Paul Gross and Max-David Briese, will race the Russian Federation over three laps for the gold medal.

Meanwhile Poland and Malaysia are set to compete for the bronze medal.

Italy, Russian Federation, and Germany led their heats in the women's team sprint with the latter two set to fight for gold in the final.

The men's team pursuit saw athletes complete 16 laps of the track, totalling four kilometres.

Morocco, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Germany, and the Russian Federation will all race in round one with a world record to aim for.

The Germans recorded a time of 3:58.703 to become the quickest ever in 2015.

The women's team pursuit first round is set to take place tomorrow with Belarus, Kazakhstan, Germany and France all vying for a place in the gold medal race.
