The NY Breakers have been cleared to compete in the second match of the 2021 International Swimming League (ISL) season, despite an unnamed member of he team testing positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week.

This test was undertaken on Thursday (August 26), and the result saw the remainder of the Breakers’ team and support staff placed into isolation.

It was the only positive result from the 300 tests conducted so far.

Today, an ISL spokesperson confirmed that the Breakers would be able to compete in their season-opener against defending champions the Cali Condors, LA Current and the Tokyo Frog Kings.

"New York Breakers will be competing in their first match of the ISL season three today," the ISL spokesperson said.

"The member of the New York Breakers who tested positive remains in isolation.

"This morning (Saturday 28 August) every other member of the team (athletes and staff) tested negative and are therefore no longer isolating."

The Breakers struggled once the two-day contest began at Piscina Felice Scandone in the Italian city of Naples, and are last at its midpoint.

They have 139.5 points - well behind the leader mark of 331.0 amassed by the Condors.

LA Current have 238.0 points and the Tokyo-aligned team 189.5.

NY drafted Poland’s Alicja Tchórz, Russia’s Arina Surkova and Daria S. Ustinova, Denmark’s Karoline Sørensen, Britain’s James Wilby, Jacob Whittle and Sarah Vasey, and The Netherlands’ Marrit Steenbergen for this season’s ISL.

The franchise finished eighth in the 10-team league last season.
