Jones overcame Azerbaijan's Aydin Suleymanli on the opening day of competition in the Icelandic capital.

The Englishman is the highest rated player competing at the event, with a rating of 2684.

He has been ranked around the 2700 mark for several years and remains one of the country's best players, winning the online European Blitz Championship in 2020.

Gabriel Sargissian of the United States, the second highest ranked player participating in the tournament, was unable to overcome Alexandra Maltevskaya in a tense match.

Switzerland's Nicolas Kueng also sprung a surprise, defeating Swedish veteran Tiger Hillarp Persson.

Icelandic Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir opened the event, which is set to run through to September 5.
