The North American and Caribbean Handball Confederation (NACHC) Women's Handball Championship group stage drew to a close at the Centre of Elgin in the Illinois city, with Greenland and Mexico winning what were two dead-rubber matches.

Greenland and Puerto Rico had already secured their places in the final after winning their first two games, while Mexico and the United States were consigned to the third-place match.

However, the final group games may have provided some clues on what to expect in tomorrow’s ranking matches.

Greenland edged past Puerto Rico 26-23 to top the group, with Aviana Kajangmat top scoring with seven goals.

They will meet again in tomorrow’s final for a place at the International Handball Federation Women’s World Championship in Spain this December.

Puerto Rico won this event on home soil at Rio Grande in 2017, while Greenland’s best performance to date was third the last time it was held in Mexico City in 2019.

The US, hosting the tournament, finished bottom of the group after losing their third straight match 25-21 to Mexico.

An unnamed member of the US team had tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday (August 21), although the rest of the team and staff tested negative the following day.

The US will take on Mexico again tomorrow, with the winner securing third place.
