After school, Clive moved on to Glasgow Young Curlers and later joined his mother club, Glasgow Academicals, subsequently representing them as President of Dunbartonshire Province.

Before his Presidency, he formed a curling section at Whitecraigs Tennis Club and later joined Beechnuts Curling Club with his wife Judith, representing them as President of Glasgow Province in the 2015-2016 season.

Thomson represented Scotland as a curler, and described competing in the Four Nations and winning multiple provincial and club competitions as the highlights of his playing career.

Thomson also had a career in tennis administration, serving as a President of the Scottish Lawn Tennis Association, and as a member of the Wimbledon Championships Management Committee for 11 years.
