Fabio Jakobsen sprinted to victory on stage eight of the Vuelta a España, claiming a second win of this year's race and taking over as the points leader.

The Dutch rider was set up well by his Deceuninck-QuickStep colleagues and edged the bunch sprint in La Manga del Mar Menor, ahead of Team DSM's Italian Alberto Dainese and Alpecin-Fenix's Jasper Philipsen.

Jakobsen now has 180 points to Philipsen's 164.

Belgium's Philipsen had been in green today.

The winning time was 3 hours 56min 5sec, and the peloton was given the same time as all the main contenders in the general classification safely navigated the 173.7-kilometre stage.

No breakaway could stick on today's stage.

Primož Roglič of Jumbo-Visma and Slovenia - chasing a third consecutive Vuelta triumph - remains eight seconds clear of Felix Großschartner, the Austrian in Bora-Hansgrohe colours.

Roglič will wear the red jersey on tomorrow's gruelling 188km stage which will conclude with the Alto de Velefique climb.

Stage nine features in excess of 4,500 metres of vertical gain.
