Texas A&M men's basketball coach Buzz Williams has been suspended for two games and his team placed on two years of probation for violating multiple National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules - including flouting COVID-19 regulations.

Among the violations was an unnamed assistant conducting off-campus workouts with several men's basketball players that were not allowed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The same assistant observed and held try-outs with a prospect during an unofficial visit at a time when this was not allowed because of COVID-19 also.

The university suspended the assistant from June 2020 to the conclusion of the 2020-2021 season, but Williams as head coach is also responsible for the conduct.

Williams was additionally accused of having impermissible contact with a prospect in July 2019.

The case was expediated through the NCAA's negotiated resolution process because the involved coaches and enforcement staff agreed on the violations and penalties.

In addition to probation and Williams' suspension, Texas A&M will pay a $5,000 (£3,669/€4,274) fine, lose five official visits during the 2021-2022 academic year, and lose seven recruiting days during the 2021-2022 academic year.

It must also suspend unofficial visits during the first three Southeastern Conference (SEC) basketball games it plays this season.

Williams did not "promote an atmosphere of compliance because of his personal involvement in the violations and because he did not monitor his staff's involvement in violations," said the NCAA.

Texas A&M will also have to reduce recruiting days during the 2021-2022 academic year by five per cent.

The Aggies' coach was named SEC Coach of the Year in 2020.

Yet the 2020-2021 season was a poor one for Texas A&M, with the team finishing last in the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament and having a handfull of games postponed because of a COVID-19 outbreak.
