Taekwondo Canada’s executive director Dave Harris has said the governing body is "proud" of its Olympic debutants Yvette Yong and Skylar Park for their performances at Tokyo 2020.

Thirty-one-year-old Yong finished fifth at the 2019 World Championships, and was competing at her maiden Olympic Games in the women’s under-47-kilogram division.

Prior to the Games, she said her appearance was "a dream come true".

Yong was beaten 19-5 by Vietnam’s Thi Kim Tuyen Truong on July 24 at Makuhari Messe Hall in Chiba, but said she found the Games a brilliant experience.

"I don’t regret anything," she said.

"I am so proud to represent Canada, my family, and our taekwondo community."

Park, aged 22, arrived in Japan ranked third in the women’s under-57kg category.

She secured her passage to the quarter-finals with a 25-15 win against Australia’s Stacey Hymar, but her quest for a medal was ended by a 18-7 defeat by Chinese Taipei’s Chia-Ling Lo.

The 2018 Pan American Championships gold medallist admitted she had hoped to progress further at Tokyo 2020.

"I wanted that gold medal so badly, but today was not that day," Park said.

"It’s disappointing, when you have so much support behind you, not to get the results that you want."

Harris also offered his gratitude for the pair’s performance at the Games, remarking: "We cannot overstate how proud we are of Skylar and Yvette.

"Their dedication and determination was inspirational, not only to the taekwondo community, but to all Canadians."

Canada last won an Olympic taekwondo medal at Beijing 2008, when Karine Sergerie clinched silver in the women’s under-67kg division.

The sport debuted at the Olympics at Sydney 2000, when Canada also won a bronze courtesy of Dominique Bosshart in the women’s over-67kg.

Taekwondo Canada says it will now hope to achieve a podium finish at Paris 2024, with the country’s prospects aided by their athletes’ "dedication and perseverance alongside lessons learned from Tokyo."
