Camila Giorgi won the Canadian Open in Montreal, beating world number six Karolína Plíšková in a stunning straight-sets triumph, while Daniil Medvedev captured his fourth Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Masters 1000 title in Toronto.

Italy's Giorgi stormed to the biggest win of her career at IGA Stadium with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over the Czech national, who reached the Wimbledon final earlier this year.

World number 71 Giorgi upset four seeded players - Elise Mertens of Belgium, Czech Grand Slam winner Petra Kvitová and American teenager Coco Gauff as well as Plíšková en route to becoming the lowest-ranked champion in Canada since Serena Williams of the United States took the title in 2011, at the time the world number 80 following a run of injuries.

The 29-year-old had the game of her life as she finished with more aces, more winners and fewer unforced errors than her opponent.

Girogi will move back inside the top 35 for the first time since May 2019 as a result.

Girogi next faces a repeat of her semi-final match-up against American Jessica Pegula in the first round of the Cincinnati Open.

Over in Toronto, Medvedev became the first Russian champion at the ATP Canadian Open since Marat Safin in 2000.

The world number two took down big-serving John Isner of the US in the semi-finals as he stood two or three feet closer to the baseline on return to counter the height and angle of the serve.

Medvedev successfully repeated this against Isner's Reilly Opelka - six feet and 11 inches tall - breaking twice as he recorded victory in 85 minutes.

The 25-year-old has now won 12 ATP titles, with 11 of those triumphs coming on hard courts.

He owns a 4-1 record in ATP Masters 1000 finals, also capturing trophies in Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris, with his one defeat in a final coming in Montreal to Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the 2019 Canadian Open.

Medvedev will now be looking towards the Cincinnati Open where he has been given a first-round bye.

The Russian is also preparing to try and avenge his 2019 US Open final defeat, again to Nadal, as the tournament gets underway on August 30.

However, Serbian Novak Djokovic will offer fierce competition as he could become the first man to win all four Grand Slams in a calendar year since 1969 following his wins at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon.
