Hania El Hammamy of Egypt and Diego Elías of Peru lifted the 2021 Manchester Open women’s and men’s crowns respectively with victories at the National Squash Centre.

In a final between the tournament’s top two seeds, world number seven El Hammamy overcame England’s Sarah-Jane Perry in straight sets to secure the women’s title.

Perry is a place higher than El Hammamy in the Professional Squash Association (PSA) world rankings, and had beaten the Egyptian at the Black Ball Squash open in December 2020, but went down 11-5, 11-9, 11-7 in Manchester.

El Hammamy expressed her delight at winning a seventh PSA career title.

"I’m so happy and relieved with that win," she said.

"I think it was obvious that I was so angry in my play.

"I was so eager and hungry.

"That’s not because I wanted revenge against Sarah-Jane but a lot of stuff in my mind that I want to prove to myself.

"It felt like I just wanted to prove to myself that this is what I’m capable of.

"I’m really glad I managed to perform like this and push, even when I was leading and Sarah-Jane found her way back in the second game, I kept fighting and didn’t want to let it go easily."

The 20-year-old triumphed in Manchester without dropping a game, beating Malaysia’s Rachel Arnold, Belgium’s Tinne Gilis and Wales’ Emily Whitlock on her way to the final.

In the men’s event, world number eight Elías was competing in only his second PSA World Tour competition of the season after being ruled out for seven months with a hip injury, but displayed no signs of rustiness in a straight-sets victory over Wales’ Joel Makin.

The Peruvian was seeded third at the Manchester Open, and the Welshman fourth.

Elías needed a tiebreak to edge the first game 12-10, and then recorded consecutive 11-6 victories to defeat world number 10 Makin, who had won the British National Championships, also held in Manchester, a week prior.

Elías said his win was extra special because of his recent injury problems.

"I’m really happy to be here and it’s my first first win on SQUASHTV, so I’m happy," Elías commented.

"I’m really happy with this tournament, I think it’s going to give me a lot of confidence.

"I was struggling with injuries, I had a problem in my hip at the start of the year, and I’m just really happy to be back playing here.

"I want to thank everyone who helped me get back to playing like this.

"First of all my dad, who was with me when I couldn’t even walk after the last tournament of last year.

"He was with me for two months just watching TV and trying to do little thing with my hip.

"All the people who helped me in Florida, too.

"My fitness coach and physio.

"I also want to thank [coach] Jonathon [Power] who’s been helping me a lot with my game."

Elías lost his first game of the PSA World Tour Silver event against England’s Patrick Rooney but recovered to win 3-1, and then beat Egyptians Omar Mosaad and world number five and tournament top seed Marwan ElShorbagy without dropping a game.

Both winners have earned $12,000 (£8,650/€10,170) in prize money.

The next competition on the PSA World Tour is also in England as the British Open - a Platinum event - takes place in Hull from August 16 to 22.
