Men’s top seed Marwan ElShorbagy was given a huge scare in the quarter-finals of the Professional Squash Association Manchester Open, before edging past world number 38 Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi of Qatar.

Al Tamimi, who knocked out fifth seed Miguel Rodriguez of Colombia yesterday, took a two game lead against the Egyptian and had a match ball in the fifth, but ElShorbagy battled back to prevail 8-11, 9-11, 11-1, 11-7, 12-10 in just under an hour.

Third seed Diego Elias of Peru had an easier encounter as he triumphed 11-5, 11-6, 11-7 against eighth seed Omar Mosaad of Egypt.

Fourth seed Joel Makin of Wales battled through in the longest game of the day as he overcame seventh seed Mazen Hesham of Egypt 7-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-6, 12-10 in 82 minutes.

There was an upset in the remaining men’s quarter-final as unseeded Youssef Ibrahim, the world number 18, overcame fellow Egyptian and sixth seed Mohamed Abouelghar 11-9, 11-5, 11-3.

In the men’s semi-finals tomorrow ElShorbagy will face Elias while Makin takes on Ibrahim.

In the women’s quarter-finals, top seed Hania El Hammamy of Egypt recorded a straight games win against seventh seed Tinne Gilis of Belgium 11-4, 11-4, 11-1.

Second seed Sarah-Jane Perry of England was also a convincing winner triumphing 11-3, 11-9, 12-10 against Sivasangari Subramaniam of Malaysia.

The third seed Tesni Evans of Wales also booked her semi-final berth after beating sixth seed Nele Gilis of Belgium 11-7, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8.

In the battle of two unseeded players Emily Whitlock of Wales triumphed in straight games against Coline Aumard of France 11-4, 12-10, 11-4.

Tomorrow’s women’s semi-finals see top seed El Hammamy face Whitlock, and Perry face Evans.
