Abraham Ancer won the World Golf Championships (WGC)-FedEx St. Jude Invitational today after a tense playoff victory in Memphis, Tennessee, keeping his cool over a two-hole shootout with Sam Burns of the United States and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama.

The Mexican birdied on the second playoff hole to clinch his first Tour victory.

The 30-year-old had started the day four strokes adrift of overnight leader Harris English but produced a solid final round score of 68 to find his way into the playoff.

English looked to be closing in on a wire-to-wire victory going onto the final nine holes of the event, but double-bogeys on the 11th and 14th and a bogey on the 16th saw him fall one stroke short of the playoff trio.

Matsuyama was nine shots adrift of English overnight, but the Masters champion made four birdies in five holes from the 12th and returned a superb 63 to take the clubhouse lead, which he would soon share with Burns.

The American looked out of the running when he double-bogeyed the 13th to slip to 13 under par, but he birdied three of the last four holes and pulled off a 25-foot putt for a three at the 18th to force his way into a tie with Matsuyama.

American Bryson DeChambeau was in second going into the final round but a back-nine collapse, which included a triple-bogey on the 11th hole, meant he finished the competition in eighth position.

While Ancer was having the round of his life, South Korean Si Woo Kim registered a score of 13 on a par-three hole which left him bottom of the standings, 30 strokes off the leaders.

It is the highest score on a par three on the PGA Tour outside of the four majors since 1983.
