The initiative aims to establish international sport cooperation, as well as the provision of an in-depth insight in the area of sport management, serving as a way to prepare students for leadership positions in sport.

Five candidates from five different countries were recommended by FISU to the DTM programme this year.

Out of these five candidates, the DTM team selected Umutoni.

"I look forward to my time in Seoul National University and South Korea and know that this will be a stepping stone for me and greatly impact sport in Uganda, Africa and the world," said Umutoni.

"This scholarship programme is a launchpad for global sport and I am extremely thankful to FISU and its continued commitment to education."

"I am very excited and thrilled for this opportunity, this is a dream come true for me.

"I am even more humbled that I was chosen among the thousands of applicants received."

The scholarship was introduced in 2016 as Tedious Ruzvidozo of Zimbabwe and Kazakh Raushan Kulakhmetova were the recipients.

Since then, two students have been chosen each year except for 2017 and 2021.

It is funded by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation.

FISU has also run a scholarship for the Master of Sport Administration of the Russian International Olympic University since 2016.

The program aims to help young people develop the skills required to become an effective sport manager.

The governing body also operated the FISU-Daegu Scholarship Programme from 2011 to 2015 to encourage young student-athletes to continue their academic careers alongside their sporting careers.
